Alvin and Anna farmed in Harlem, Stephenson County, Illinois. Alvin died May 9, 1739, in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. He was buried May 9, 1939. Following is a transcription of his obituary from the May 8, 1939 issue of the Freeport Journal-Standard:
Alvin Gassman, Harlem Township
Alvin Gassman, 67 years old, a resident of Harlem township, died Sunday morning in a Freeport hospital. He had been ailing a long time.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Leamon funeral chapel at Lena. Rev. Paul Reichert, pastor of Salem Evangelical church, near Eleroy, officiating. Interment will be made in Salem cemetery.
Mr. Gassman was a lifelong resident of Stephenson county. He was born in Erin township on April 7, 1872, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gassman. He was united in marriage on December 31, 1897, to Anna Prasse. They were the parents of one child, a daughter.
Mr. Gassman had been engaged in farming since his boyhood and ever since his marriage had resided on the same farm in the township of Harlem. He was a member of Salem Evangelical church, near Eleroy, and was active for many years in its affairs. He served as a member of the church council for sixteen years.
Survivors are the widow, Anna; the daughter, Leona, who is the wife of Arthur Klaas; two grandchildren, Marjorie and Ruth Klass; two sisters, Mrs. Arch Winters of Eleroy, Mrs. Theodore Heidenreich of Lena; two brothers, Daniel Gassman of Freeport and Fred of Erin township, and his aged mother, Mrs. Mary Gassman of Lena.
Anna died July 25, 1946, in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois.
