Anna Coombes Boyajian was born in Delaware to parents John Coombes and Laura Shaw. After the death of her mother in 1881, she moved to Guernsey in the Channel Islands with her sister Laura and brother William, where they were cared for by their grandmother Mary Nicholls Coombes. After her father remarried to Jane "Jennie" Bridge in 1884, the three siblings moved back to Chester, Pennsylvania, along with their grandmother. Anna graduated from Jefferson Hospital Training School for Nurses in Philadelphia in 1902 and was a registered nurse for 37 years. She was engaged to George Boyajian in 1906 and moved to New York after they were married. She lived in Astoria, Queens for 20 years prior to her death.
