Businessman, philanthropist, leading Catholic layman. A UCLA graduate, he was President of the campus Newman Club as an undergraduate, and years later became a member of the Board of Regents of UCLA and served as President of the Alumni Assn. The Cyril Nigg Newman Center at UCLA is named in his honor, he being the financial contributor for the building. He worked for U.S.Gypsum and Kellogg before owning and operating Bell Brand Foods, a potato chip manufacturer. He served on the boards of schools, charitable organizations and hospitals. He was a major donor to the building of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles and was one of the first recipients of the Cardinal's Award from the Archdiocese. Also received the Papal Honors as a Knight of Malta, Knight Commander of St. Gregory and Knight of the Holy Sepulchre.
