Durward Allen Rieper was born near Marcus, Iowa on March 19, 1934 to Henry and Verna (Ohlendorf) Rieper. He died May 3, 2015 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 81 years one month and 14 days.

In the 1930s his family moved to the Wellsville- St. Louis, Missouri area where they remained until after World War II. They returned to the Marcus, IA area where Durward graduated from high school in 1952. He served in the Navy Reserve and the US Navy from 1952 - 1956. When he was on active duty he worked on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Boxer.

After leaving the Navy he began farming. He married Beverly Schiefen February 10, 1962. They farmed west of Cleghorn, IA until 1976 when they moved to their current home in the rural Beresford/Alcester area. Durward was a charter member of the USS Boxer Veterans Association.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly; four sons, Charles of Columbus, OH, Robert and his wife, Sandra, of San Antonio, TX, James of Dallas, TX and William “Bill” and his wife, Tracy, of Ft. Lewis, WA; five grandchildren, Amelia Neorr, Anna Hanson-Rieper, Andrew Rieper, Amelia Rieper and Alexander Rieper; one sister, Joan Potts and her husband, James of Hudson, WI; and one aunt, Ruth Ann Meehan of Marcus. IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 10:30AM Thursday at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford. Visitation will be 6-7PM Wednesday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford followed by a prayer service.
