PLEASANT GARDEN | Charlotte Caudle Bruton passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Big Elm Nursing Center in Kannapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Garden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip Deberry officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Asheboro.

Charlotte was born in Surry County to John Franklin and Zilphia Haymore Caudle, the seventh of nine children. She was a graduate of Randleman High School and Jones Business College. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and sister. Charlotte enjoyed cooking, gardening, flowers and all kinds of needlework, especially making quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Pleasant Garden United Methodist Church. On Aug. 8, 1937, she married the Rev. Paul Bruton, a United Methodist minister, and served as his loyal helpmate during his years in the ministry.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years; her parents; her granddaughter, Renee Litaker; three brothers, Frank, John and Richard Caudle; and four sisters, Alma Putnam, Ola Lewis, Betty Henderson and Allene Fitch.She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Penninger and her husband, Micky, of Kannapolis, and Hilda Litaker and her husband, Lonnie, of Pleasant Garden; three grandsons, Michael Penninger and his wife, Tracy, of Concord, Charles Penninger and his wife, Sharon, of China Grove, and Scott Litaker and his wife, Gretchen, of Simpsonville, S.C.; two granddaughters, Beth Smith and her husband, Keith, of Mooresville, and Emily Cook and her husband, Jason, of Kannapolis; great-grandchildren Michala Penninger, Lauren and Brandon Smith, Preston and Peyton Penninger, Chandler and Kayleigh Cook, Ethan Litaker; a sister, Lillian Speagle of Trinity, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home in Pleasant Garden.
