Erna Sauer, 96, of 515 N. Front St. in New Ulm, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Westchester Nursing Home in Tempe, Ariz.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with burial in the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of the arrangements.

Erna is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna "Dee" and Richard Groschupf of Green Valley, Ariz., Luverne Johnson of Chandler, Ariz., and Evelyn and Robert Bernet of Owatonna; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kurt Sauer in May of 1975; sisters, Martha Vorwerk and Ann Cordes; brother Art Harms; and a son-in-law, C. Odell Johnson.

Erna was born on Nov. 13, 1906, in Gibbon, to Fred and Anna (Silberman) Harms. She married Kurt Sauer on Aug. 23, 1928, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon. After marriage they lived in New Ulm. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, a member of the Ladies Aid (Quilters) at church, and a member of the New Ulm Senior Citizens.
