Bernhard H. Wallrichs, 78, died Saturday June 1, 2013 at Valdese General Hospital in Valdese, North Carolina.
A service honoring Bernie's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Callender with the Rev. Jon Rollefson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by V.F.W. Post No. 1856 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Unit. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Bernie is survived by his wife Marilyn Wallrichs, Fort Dodge; his sons, Thomas (wife Melinda) Wallrichs, Rutherford College, NC; Steve (wife Laurie) Wallrichs, Columbus, OH; four granddaughters, Megan, Delaware; Katherine and Claire, both of Missouri; and Lauren, North Carolina; his siblings, JoAnn (husband Ben) Egli, Des Moines; Walter (wife Elaine) Wallrichs, Council Bluffs; and John Wallrichs, Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Alvin Wallrichs.
Bernhard (Bernie) Herman Wallrichs, the son of Bernhard and Kate (Reiners) (sic) Wallrichs, was born May 30, 1935, in Fort Dodge. He graduated from Barnum High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bernie was united in marriage to Marilyn Louise Ahlrichs on September 23, 1956. Bernie was employed at Cargill and Gus Glaser's. Bernie retired from the Fort Dodge Community School District where he worked in the maintenance/custodial departments. Bernie was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Callender. He enjoyed camping, fishing, word puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. Bernie was especially proud of his sons and their families; and he enjoyed keeping up with his granddaughters' travels and adventures. He also loved music and singing, and his whistle was always a cheerful sound.
