After the death of his first wife, he married secondly her sister, Anna Friederike Ahlke Katharine Kohlmann.
They had 4 children before moving the Iowa in 1869: Diedrich Johann "John D.", Carl Georg August, Catherine Gerhardine Henrietta, Mathilde Fredrike.
The following children were born in Iowa: Katherine Friederike, Joanne Diederike, Joanna Gerhardine, Ahline Diederike
The family He settled on a farm 3 miles from Marengo, Iowa.
Later he purchased a farmstead in Iowa Township, Iowa County, Iowa. After Anna died, he built a small home beside old homestead.
Here he lived for about 12 years, when health made him live with children.
He died 20 May 1916 in the home of his daughter, Johanna Huedepohl, in Iowa Township, Iowa County, Iowa.
His only known brother, Johann Diedrich Heitshusen (1831-1893), also immigrated to this part of Iowa county in 1868 with his wife Ahlke (nee Moennich) and children.
