Dee Simmons, 35, father of six children, died instantly Friday about the noon hour when a bolt of lightening struck a barn in which he and his brother, Burtis, were standing. The brothers ran into the barn to get out of a shower that had caught them in the field at work.

Death came about swiftly, leaving only mute evidence of how suddenly a useful life can be snuffed out. Burtis Simmons was standing only a few feet from his brother. He was stunned by the bolt, but recovered a few minutes later and was able to summon help.

The brothers were standing in the hall of the barn. It had openings in the east and west . The lightening struck the end of the gabel of the barn and came on down, tearing away a few planks, but the structure did not catch on fire. The clothes which covered the body of Simmons were torn into shreds. A cap worn by the unfortunate man was torn up......

The barn was located on a farm in the edge of Grantsburg.

Obituary excerpts: ( Compare listing of siblings with Isa and Burtis) " He has four brothers and two sisters, one living in Vanita, Okla., Francis of Chicago; Burtis and Loren of Grantsburg; Isa Furr of Chicago and Luva Boone of Redfield, S. D., also one half brother, Jewell Simmons of Harrisburg.

Dee had lived in Grantsburg community most of all of his life which needs no comment. It was proven by the large donation that was given to his wife and children by his neighbors and friends.......

Funeral services were conducted by Bro. Ethridge and the body laid to rest in the Kerley cemetery."
