Donald William Berndt Sr, 83, of Minden, died Sunday, Feb 17, 2002 at V A Home in Grand Island.
Don was born Sep 8, 1918 in Minden to August Fred and Emma (Schaper) Berndt.
He grew up in the Minden area and graduated from Minden High School in 1935, Creighton University School of Pharmacy in 1942 and from the University of Arizona as a Naval Officer in 1944. From 1945 to 1953 he served his country as a Navy Reserve Officer.
After World War II he took over Berndt Pharmacy which was started in Minden by his father, August in 1905.
On Feb 14, 1942 he married Gladys Bockhahn White in St Joseph, Mo., in the same Lutheran Church Glady's mother had been married in.
He sold the pharmacy in 1985 in order to spend full time with his family at Harlan County Lake.
He was a life member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Minden and started the Lutheran Layman's League in Minden. He was also a member of the Legion Club, president and a charter member of the Minden Planning and Zoning Commissions until 1989.
As a pharmacist he was a life member of American Pharmaceutical Association,
the National Association of Retail Druggists, and the National Pharmacist Association of which he also served as a board member.
Survivors include his son, Don William Berndt II, of Omaha; daughter, Donna Sue Rehtus of Minden; grandchildren, Todd Rehtus, Tracy Geist, Sean Berndt and Trey Berndt; great grandchildren, Josh Geist, Kaile Geist, Allie Geist, Zack Rehtus, Jessica Rehtus, Hannah Berndt and Lauryn Berndt.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Imogene (Berndt) Flack; and his beloved wife, Gladys.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb 19 at 2 p.m. at the St Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev Donald Becker officiating.
Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery with military rites provided by the Minden American Legion Post 94.
Memorials are suggested to Don William Berndt Sr., for the Memorial Fund for Alzheimer's Care Unit on the third floor of the Veterans Home in Grand Island. Mail to the Minden Exchange Bank., P O Box 179, Minden, NE 68959.
