Walter Eugene (“Gene”) Putnam, 92, of Grover, N.C., died Thursday, May 28, 2015, at his home.
Born in Cherokee County to the late Thomas Lee Putnam and Sudie Foster Putnam, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Jordan Putnam; two brothers, Lee Putnam and Bill Putnam; four sisters, Elsie Ross, Alie Andrews, Flora Martin, and Catherine Hardin; and a great-grandson, James Evan Martin Felkel.
He retired from Minette Mills in Grover, where he served as superintendent of weaving and winding. Also a farmer, he was an active member of First Baptist Church in Grover, a member of the VFW, the Cattleman’s Association and the Grover Lions Club. He served in the United States Army in Normandy with Patton and was recipient of four Bronze Stars.
Surviving are daughters, Jackie Raduly of Blacksburg, Jeanie Hall and Vickie Bingman, both Grover; a sister, Janelle Diffenderfer of Blacksburg; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, May 31, at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Grover with the Rev. John Barnhardt officiating.
Visitation was in the fellowship hall from 2:30- 3:30 p.m. prior to the service. Interment with full military honors provided by the Marine Corp League Foothills Detachment was in Grover Cemetery.
