Captain Ensminger was the son of Johann Nicolaus Ensminger (July 22 1732 Alsace, France/Germany- April 28 1781 Lancaster/ Lebanon Co. PA) and Christina Elisabetha Phillipi (Oct 31/Nov 3 1734 Alsace, France/ Germany- Aug 31 1803 Lancaster/ Lebanon Co. PA). Christina was the daughter of Johannes Philippi (July 9 1698 Volksberg, Bas-Rhin, France; chr in 1714-died in Cocalico, Lanc Co PA). Johannes arrived in Philadelphia on August 28 1750 on the ship Phoenix. Her mother was Maria Christina Cleiss (abt 1698 Alsace, France-Cocalico Twp. Lancaster Co. PA). Christina probably immigrated with Johannes (Christina's parents are from the Rootsweb tree of Nancy Gibson Lowe, who also gives the full name as Anna Christina Elizabeth Philippi). John Peter's paternal grandparents were Johann Peter Ensminger (Jan 28 1694 Waldhambach, Alsace, France -Oct 1739 Cocalico Twp PA; also known as Hans Peter and John Peter) and Maria Catherina (Katarina) Trautmann (1699- ? ).

In 1733 Johann emigrated with his parents and three older siblings from the German province of Alsace to Cocalico Township.

During the Revolutionary War John Peter Ensminger was a Lieutenant in the Lancaster County Militia under the command of Lt Col John Gloninger. He married Catherine Gloninger who was John's sister. John Peter rose to the rank of Captain, and was known as Capt Peter Ensminger. They were the parents of the following known children:

He was originally buried at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. In the late 1800's a larger chapel was constructed using the the cemetery land. About 1898 the graves were re-interred to a single vault at Mount Lebanon Cemetery with no tombstones erected.

Burial location is from Wengert Family Tree (Edith Kern Wengert & John E. Wengert), and corroborated with historical records.

Family relationships and genealogy are from D.A.R. records and our family tree. Some records state he died on December 9, 1814. Contributor MossLady has the date of October 9. If that matches burial records in October, then it would be correct. I am changing it for now.

Ensminger genealogy:

Any possible relationship between two men with the surname Ensminger who were living in villages only two miles apart in France during the 17th century has been lost in time.

I-Hans Gerber, son of Peter, was referred to as Hans 'of Ensming' later in his life. At the time of his burial on December 26 1630 in Diemerigen, Alsace (now the Department of Bas-Rhin, France), he was recorded as Hans Ensminger.

II-Hans Meyer 'der Ensminger' (also spelled Einssminger) came to Bockenheim, Alsace about 1600. Hans Meyer was born in Ensming, Lorriane in 1575. He died in 1621 in Sarre Union, Alsace, France. He married Margaretha Wagner August 5, 1617 in Sarre Union, Alsace, France. According to researcher Raymond Martin Bell, Hans had at least two children, Jacob and Adam. Georg Ensminger (believed to be his grandson or perhaps another son), was the richest man in the village of Waldhambach (just east of Diemeringen) at the time a tax list was drawn in the summer of 1662. This line became the Ensminger families of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties. Most of the Pennsylvania Ensminger immigrants were evangelical Lutherans.

The names of both of these men were associated with cattle. Gerber means tanner and a meyer is a dairy farmer. The surname Ensminger suggests that both men originally came from the village of Insming (Ensming) in Lorraine.

*John Peter's 3rd Great-Grandparents~Hans George Ensminger (son or grandson of Hans II above, and Margaretha Wagner) was born about 1620 in Waldhambach, Alsace and died in 1708. He married Catherine (abt 1635) in Waldhambach, Alsace, and they were the parents of the following children:

1-Philip Ensminger (July, 1639-Jan 15 1712)*** this Captain John Peter Ensminger's great-great grandfather
2-Hans Nicolaus Ensminger (Oct 21 1642)
3-Catharina Ensminger (abt 1646)
4-Appolonia Ensminger (abt 1652)
5-Georg Ensminger (abt 1653)
6-Barbel Ensminger (abt 1655)

*John Peter's 2nd Great-Grandparents~Philip and his unknown wife were the parents of the following known children:

1-Matthias Ensminger (abt 1664)
2-Philip Ensminger, Jr. (1666) *John Peter's Great-Grandfather

4-Anna Elisabetha Ensminger (abt 1670)
5-Anna Margaretha Ensminger (abt 1672)
6-Weintraud Magdalena Ensminger (?)

*John Peter's Great-Grandparents~Philip Ensminger, Jr. married Elisabetha Quirin (Sept 21, 1671 Wolfskirchen, Alsace, France) in about 1691 in Waldhambach, Alsace, France. They were the parents of the following known childen:

2-Johan Peter Ensminger (Jan 28 1694) *Captain John Peter Ensminger's Grandfather
3-Hans Jacob Ensminger (abt 1695)
4-Catharina Margaretha Ensminger (Sept 21 1696)
5-Johan Nicholas Ensminger (Oct 4 1699)
6-Anna Elisabeth Ensminger (June 2 1701)
7-Maria Catharine Ensminger (June 1 1702)
8-Johan Heinrich Ensminger (1705)Husband of Catherine (Gloninger)Ensminger.Father of Catherine (Ensminger)Miller. Son of Nicholas Ensminger and Christina Elizabeth Philippi.
