Born in the village of Mussbach - which has since been incorporated into the city of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse - he was the son of Heinrich and Maria Eva (Wiedemann) Bassler. He came to the US on a ship named Chimborazo arriving in New Orleans on April 25, 1854. He married Regine Holtzapfel on May 8 1866 in St John Evangelical Church in Mascoutah (now UCC.)

--Jacob Bassler, a well-known saloon keeper, residing on East Main street, died at noon yesterday at the age of 50 years after an illness of about four hours. He was a member of the Ninth Illinois Regiment and marched in a parade with his comrades at the re-union of his regiment last Tuesday. The funeral will take place at 2 p. m. tomorrow.
