Joseph Robert Kisch, 78, Bismarck, died June 4, 2015 in a Bismarck hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 9, at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with Rev. Paul Becker officiating. Burial will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson.

The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joseph was born April 19, 1937, in Karlsdorf, Yugoslavia to Joseph and Margaret (Griffatong) Kisch. Orphaned at the age of 10, he along with his brother Nikolas, were adopted into the home of Agnes Urbanec in Dickinson, ND where he was raised and educated, graduating from high school in Dickinson. He received a bachelor degree from Dickinson State University and a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas. He married Bonnie Lisko on August 1, 1961 at St. Joseph’s Church in Dickinson. He went on to teach at St. Gertrude’s of Raleigh, ND from 1960 to 1965. They then moved to Jamestown where he taught German from 1965 to 1988 at Jamestown High School. He enjoyed traveling to Europe annually for many years with his students teaching them about German culture. He retired and they moved to Bismarck where he was the owner of Swiss Colony at Kirkwood Mall. After retirement he was a substitute teacher in Bismarck-Mandan.

Joseph was a member of the ND National Guard for eight years. He was camp director at Metigoshe Boy Scout camp from 1962- 1965. He also was a member of the American Association of Teachers of German where he was elected to the National Executive Committee from 1968 to 1970. He was owner of European Student Program and promoted German as second language. For five tears he was a counselor at Concordia College International Language Villages. He was a member of the Jamestown Germans from Russia Heritage Society and a member of the Elks.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Bonnie, Bismarck; daughter, Jodi (Terry) Mercier, Kealakekua, HI; sons, Jay (Leslie) Kisch, Barnsville, MN and Jon Kisch, Northglenn, CO; grandchildren, J. Ryne Kisch and Christy and Mikela Mercier; brother, Nikolas (Sheri) Kisch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son James Michael Kisch.
