Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod pastor who served at Detroit, Michigan from 1913 to 1924, after which he started on his academic career. He first served as a professor at St. John's College, Winfield, Kansas from 1924 to 1927. He then returned to the parish ministry, serving in Michigan and Denver, Colorado from 1927 to 1948. During World War II he served as field secretary of the Lutheran Commission for Prisoners of War, where he served as a chaplain to German prisoners of war. After the war he received his doctor of theology degree from Iliff School of Theology at Denver University in 1947. In 1948 he became a professor at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana, serving there until his death. He was an author of both booklets and articles on church history and also was a translator of German theological works.
