He was born June 13, 1931, on the farm near Homestead, Iowa, the son of Carl and Meta (Huedepohl) Walter. He attended Immanuel Parochial School near Williamsburg. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. Orville was united in marriage to Rita Knipfer on June 25, 1955, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. He had farmed and lived on the family farm all his life.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Orville was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Iburg Poulson VFW Post 8797 in Williamsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rodney; three sisters, Norma Schmidt, Erna Collingwood and Lillie Neitzel; four brothers, Adolph, LeRoy, Melvin and Arnold; a granddaughter, Rachel Evans; and a grandson, Chad Evans.
