Johanne Friedrike Charlotte Voss was the daughter of Christian Gottfried Voss and Maria Elisabeth Hartke. Born in Manow, Köslin county, Pomerania, Prussia (now Manowo, Poland) in 1828, she was the youngest of three siblings (Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Voss, Wilhelmine Christine Luise Voss, & Friedrike). When she was 4, her father died. Her mother Maria remarried, to Christian David Hartkop from Vangerow, Köslin County, where they moved and resided.
Friedrike married Ernst Lau on 8 Oct 1853 in Vangerow. Ernst had two children from his first marriage, Bertha and Carl. They had six children together: Wilhelmina (d.age 1 in Germany), Anton, August W, Julius HR, Augusta, and Reinhold.
The family immigrated to America on 21 May 1872, arriving at the Port of Baltimore, and eventually making their home in Mendota, Dakota County, Minnesota, just outside of St. Paul. They a built a small farm, a sturdy farmhouse, still standing today (2014), and raised their children. Friedrika died five years after immigration in 1877, cause unknown.
Her husband and children remained in this area. Ernst died in Mendota in 1890. Most of the family is buried in Riverview Cemetery.
