Nellie Jane Mangold, 84, of Aberdeen, WA, died of cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at her daughter’s Bellevue, WA, home. She was born May 24, 1918, at Coffee Creek, Mont., to Elbert Levi and Amelia May (Fulbright) Stout. After living in Coffee Creek, Arlee, and Missoula, Mont., and Seattle, WA, she moved to Aberdeen in 1943. On May 16, 1938, she married Wendelin Joseph Mangold in Missoula. He died in 1989. Mrs. Mangold was a homemaker. She was also a 59-year member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen, and belonged to the church guild and alter society. In 1988, the Knights of Columbus named the Mangold's, “Family of the Year”.

Nellie also was a charter member of and volunteer with the St. Joseph Hospital Service League in Aberdeen. She volunteered with St. Mary’s Feed the Hungry program for 16 years and was a Harbor Health Care volunteer. She also volunteered with the Coastal Community Action Program in Aberdeen, were an assistant Girl Scout leader and a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Retired Eagles Activity Club. In addition, she was a Grays Harbor Opportunity 80’s Economic Development volunteer and an executive board member of the United Commercial Travelers Council 710. She belonged to the Eagles Auxiliary, Golden Seniors Club, and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Aberdeen.

Nellie was interested in Native American history, arts and beadwork. In her 70’s she took several hot air balloon rides. Those close to her said that her next planned adventure was skydiving. She also enjoyed handwork, arts and crafts, crocheting, reading and traveling. She and her husband donated several items to the Westport South Beach Historical Society and to the Aberdeen Museum of History.

She is survived by two sons, Edward J. of Mill Creek, WA, and James L. of Alvin, TX; Three daughters, Dolores M. Buckingham, and Patricia M. Lee both of Vancouver, WA, and Joanne L. Wilson of Bellevue, WA; a brother, Edward E. Stout of Fallbrook, CA; a sister, Bessie Webb of Colville, WA; 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. A visitation was held at Whiteside Family Mortuary, a funeral Mass was held at St. Mary’s Catholic church, and interment is at Fern Hill Cemetery, all in Aberdeen.
