Son of Captain Monroe Spencer Ryder and Sarah Elizabeth Terrell, husband of Eloise F. Meyers and father of Eloise (married Mortimer Brown) and Harold F. Ryder.

Obituary - Frederick M. Ryder, 63 year old defense worker, of 31 Pine Street, was found dead in his car in a snowbank on the north side of the Montauk Highway in Oakdale last Friday evening at 6:45 by a resident of Oakdale. An examination by Coroner Grover A. Silliman showed Mr. Ryder had succumbed to a heart attack. According to friends, Mr. Ryder had suffered from a heart condition for some time. On Thursday night during the snow storm which struck this region, he helped shovel a number of cars out of snowbanks and returned to his home in an exhausted condition. Mrs. Ryder was unable to prevail upon his to stay home from work on Friday. He felt that inasmuch as he was engaged in defense work he had to do his job. After leaving the Huntington shop where he was employed, he drove a fellow workman who travelled back and forth with him each day to his home in Islip, and continued on alone. Evidently overcome suddenly about 2,000 feet east of the main gates of Idlehour, he drove his car across the road to the north side of the highway where it was stopped by a snowbank and stalled. Mr. Ryder had lived on Pine Street for the past 12 years. He was born in Patchogue and for many years was employed by E. Bailey & Son in their lumber mill. He was a member of the Carpenter's Union and the Patchogue Lodge, Junior Order of United American Mechanics. He leaves his wife, Eloise F. Ryder; a son, Harold F. Ryder who is in the United States Army; a daughter, Mrs. Mortimer Brown of Westport, Conn.; his father, Monroe S. Ryder of Patchogue; four sisters, Mrs. Henry Bishop and Mrs. Alber Moger of Patchogue; Mrs. Leon Dininny of Blue Point, and Miss Martha Ryder of Holtsville; a brother, Bernard Ryder of Babylon and four grandchildren, one of whom, Robert Ryder, made his home with him. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Isaacson Funeral Home by the Rev. D. Paul Herriott of the Sayville Congregational Chuch. Cremation followed at Fresh Pond in Brooklyn. The news of her husband's death was conveyed to Mrs. Ryder, anxiously awaiting his return from work, by her grandson, Robert, who heard the news while attending the movies.
