Leona Yvonne Sovell was born on March 15, 1928 to Frank and Theresa (Pytlewixz) Sik near Ivanhoe. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Cantius, Wilno. She attended rural country school. Leona came from a family with eight other siblings.
She started working for various farm families in the rural Ivanhoe area – babysitting and doing general housework in her early teens.

She was a waitress at Whips Cafe in Ivanhoe and worked at the Earl Shackelton Restaurant in Canby before marrying Edward A. Sovell on June 3, 1952 at St. John Cantius Church in Wilno in the first dual wedding ceremony with her sister Joan and her husband Marcel Lipinski.
The couple farmed for their whole life and she remained on the farm the rest of her life after Edward’s death on January 30, 1996. She had a hard work ethic and remained active until the last month of her life.

Leona enjoyed raising chickens, geese, and ducks for many years and, in later years, also helped with cattle chores. She enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, cooking, baking, had a knack for making houseplants thrive, and liked listening to polka music. For six years she babysat Ken’s oldest two daughters, Emily and Ashley. She also enjoyed spending time with all of her grandchildren.

She is survived by sons: Kenneth (and Jane) Sovell of Marshall and Dennis (and Lynn) Sovell of Wells, MN; daughter: Karen Sovell of Ivanhoe; grandchildren: Tracy Bohm, Trisha Moran, Sheena (and Jesse) Sovell, Shelby Sovell, Shawnee Sovell, Emily Sovell, Ashley Sovell, Natalie Sovell, and eight great grandchildren; sister: Joan Lipinski of St. Paul, MN; brother: Lawrence Sik of Tracy, MN; sister-in-laws: Mary Sik, Canby, MN, Helen Sik, Benson, MN; brother-in-laws: Dave Sovell, Maple Plain, MN, Marcellus Drietz, Ivanhoe, MN, and Marcel Lipinski, St. Paul, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
