A PIONEER GONE
An Early Settler of Macon Township Dies at Home of Son in Sheridan, Wyoming.
The early pioneers of Harvey county are gradually being called to their eternal home, the latest being Christian Schmitt, who located four miles east of Halstead in 1872. Here he lived until about five years ago.
Christian Schmitt was born in Bavaria Germany, in 1839, where he resided with his parents until twenty-four years of age, at which time he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Eliza. From their home in Germany, they came to America where the family settled at Marizon, Illinois. One year later they moved to Harvey county, settling on a farm in Macon township, where he resided until a few years ago when he decided to spend his declining years with his children.
On July 3, 1915 he passed to the Great Beyond at the home of his son Henry in Sheridan, Wyoming, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 8 days. He was the father of nine children, five daughters and four sons, eight of whom survive him, one son having died in childhood. Mr. Schmitt was an obliging neighbor, a kind and loving father and devoted to his home and family.
The children who are left to mourn his loss are Chris of Macon township, John of Darlington township, Henry of Sheridan, Wyo., Mrs. D. B. Barley and Mrs. George Kingdon of Oakland, Cal., Mrs. M. Raymond of Pueblo, Col., Mrs. S. Carpenter of Waverly, Penn., and Mrs. Tom O’Neal of Auburn, Wash.
The funeral was held from the home of his son, C. Schmitt, Jr., three and a half miles east of town last Thursday and was conducted by Rev. Oliver of the Presbyterian Church. It was largely attended by old friends and neighbors.
