A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster September 24, 1861, as a private with Co. C, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and promoted to corporal, date unknown. He later transferred to the U. S. Signal Corps and honorably discharged on a date not yet discovered. Generally speaking, transfers to the Signal Corps took place in mid to late 1864, and the men discharged ca. August 1865.
He married Anna Maria Fetter February 27, 1872, but no children were found. He died in Lancaster General Hospital from "pulmonary congestion due to chronic myocarditis" with "cardio-renal disease" a contributing factor."
