Willumsen began his career in the 1880s but his breakthrough came in 1889 after a visit to Paris and Spain, where the strong sunlight influenced his style of painting. After 1890 he lived mostly in France. Around 1930 he began a relationship with the French dancer and painter Michelle Bourret that lasted the rest of his life; he had previously been married twice, both to sculptors. The Willumsen Museum at Frederikssund in Denmark, opened in 1957, contains a considerable collection of his paintings and sculptures. The artist is buried in the museum park. His work was the subject of a 2006 exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
