Maat German Navy. After being badly damaged by a collision with the Canadian frigate HMCS New Glasgow, the German submarine U-1003 (captained by Oberleutnant zur See Werner Heinrich Wilhelm Strübing) was scuttled in the Northern Channel north of Malin Head, Ireland on 23 March 1945. The Captain and 14 crew members (including Karl-Heinz Golz), perished in the water and of the survivors, another 2 (Karl Maier and Paul Zander) died soon after being rescued and were buried at sea.

The body of Karl-Heinz Golz was washed ashore on the coast of Scotland at Ardmore, Harlosh, Dunvegan, Skye, Scotland on 8 April 1945. The bodies of

Walter Bücker,
Erwin Prill,
Georg Pruchnik,
Alfred Schenk,
Werner Strübing,
Erich Thoss and
Georg Woiczyk
were also recovered and buried but those of
Paul Barwig,
Gerhard Greulich,
Herbert Karp,
Josef Löffler and
Franz Szukala
do not appear to have been found.
