In 1905 John left Szalowa, Poland and went to Hamberg, Germany. On May 20, 1905 he boarded the S.S. RHAETIA and sailed to the United States. He gave his destination as Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Arriving at the Port of New York on June 10, 1905. He recalled the boat trip across the Atlantic on the German liner took fourteen days. He eventually made his way to Cheboygan, Michigan.
