Clifford LeRoy Nelson was born on June 18, 1933 to Simon M. and Ruby (Steffensen) Nelson at home in Strandburg, South Dakota. He was confirmed in his faith at the Christian Mission Covenant Church of LaBolt in 1948. He attended school at Madison Township #4 in Grant County and graduated from Strandburg High School in 1951. He was drafted into the United States Army on December 8, 1953 and served with the Company B 512th Armed Infantry Battalion. He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1955.

On September 2, 1956 he married Tanya Little in Minneapolis, MN. There were 2 daughters born to this union. They divorced in 1973.

He married Denise Briest on August 2, 1974 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gaylord, MN. They made their home in St Louis Park, Mn until 1984.

Clifford was employed as a machinist/programmer at Pako Corporation in Golden Valley, MN from 1956-1982. Clifford and Denise moved to Stockholm, SD and became owners/operators of Ma & Pa’s Pantry grocery store in 1984. He then drove a fuel truck for Stockholm Coop from 1984-1990, and was employed by Watertown Community Oil from April of 1991 until he retired in December of 1996. He joined Elim Evangelical Covenant Church of Stockholm in 2006. He was the custodian for the church and assisted with the treasurer bookkeeping.

Clifford was a loving and caring husband and father. He worked hard to provide for his family. He loved animals and raising and caring for his goats. His motto when a newborn goat kid was not very responsive, “where there is life, there is hope”. That attitude saved many kids that were struggling to survive. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. He enjoyed traveling and visiting his family. A travel highlight was an inland tour of Alaska.

Clifford is survived by his wife, Denise; two children, Kelly (Chuck) Miller of St. Petersburg, FL, and Heidi (Tom) Rusch of Minnetonka, MN; one brother, Lane (Teresa) Nelson of Ortonville, MN; a sister-in-law, Chris Nelson of Milbank; a brother-in-law, Gerald (Kim) Briest of Hutchinson, MN; two sisters-in-law, Diane (Simeon) Okwulehie of Brooklyn Center, MN, and Angela Briest of Gaylord, MN; five grandchildren, Andre Kress, Amber Kress (Trey Moore), Olivia (Raymond) Rohena, Aja Rae Miller (Kody Larson) and Skye Miller; three great grandchildren, Darren Cormier, Canaan Filaramo, and Emanuel Moore, all of St. Petersburg, Fl area, 4 step grandchildren, Elsa, Luke, Hannah & Grace Rusch, and his nieces and nephews.
