India President, Scientist. He was a well-known scientist who served as President of India from 2002 to 2007. As a young man, he studied physics and aerospace engineering. Kalam spent the next four decades, involved as a scientist in India's space and military missile development. Kalam became known as the "Missile Man of India" for his work in ballistic missile and launch vehicle techology. He played a very important role in India's Pokhran II nuclear tests in 1998, the first such test by India since 1974. Kalam was elected President of India in 2002 by both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress. He served in this post for five years, serving with distinction, before returning to education and writing. Kalam was the recipient of India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna. He was well respected around the world.
