Joseph A. Mardin, Jr. 1835-1909

Civil War - Co D, 52nd Wis Inf

Door County Advocate; 5-13-1909
Joseph Mardin, the sage of Shivering Sands, and owner of Castle Romance, is dead, having departed this life quite suddenly and unexpectedly some time during the night of Friday last. He was discovered in his 'castle on the creek' Saturday forenoon by Richard Walker, who had been keeping watch for just such a happening for some time past, his eccentric neighbor not having been well for several months or more past. He died while sitting in a rocking chair with his feet in the oven of a cookstove, having to all appearances sat down to warm himself after supper - the table being set - and falling asleep death overtook him without awakening or causing him to make the least struggle. Undertaker Hahn was notified and Saturday afternoon went out and prepared the remains for burial. The deceased was on Sunday removed to the undertaking rooms in the city, from where the funueral took place on Monday afternoon, the remains being interred at Bayside by members of G.A.R. post besides those of his wife who preceeded him about twelve years ago. He was 74 years old, having been born on March 30, 1835. For the past thirty years he has been a resident of the county and leaves four children viz: Mrs. Naomi Johnson, Marinette; Mrs. Florence Clumb, Menominee; Mrs. Julius Noll and Berry Mardin, now in Alden, N.D. Mr. and Mrs. Clumb and Mrs. Johnson attended the obsequies. The property will be probated, the deceased having left no will. Jos. Mardin was a member of Co. I. 12th Wisconsin Infantry, during the latter part of the war. Since the death of his wife he has lived alone on his place in this township and there was probably no better known person in the county than he.
