Jerry LeRoy Kaempfe, 77, died September 17, 2011 at his home in Hays.

He was born December 1, 1933 in Sylvan Grove, Kansas the son of Albert and Clara (Seehafer) Kaempfe. He graduated from Sylvan Grove High School and received a Bachelor's Degree from FHS (now FHSU) in 1956. He was a member of the Sig Tau Fraternity while attending Fort Hays State. After serving in the US Army for two years, he married Viola Vincent at Messiah Lutheran Church on August 30, 1959. He embarked on a lifelong career in the insurance industry. He covered all of western Kansas for AAL until 1989 at which time he became an independent agent. He received the National Sales Achievement award 21 times and the National Quantity Award 26 times. He was an insurance arbitrator for the State of Kansas.

He was a member of Chartered Life Underwriters (CLU) since 1975, Messiah Lutheran Church, Northwest Kansas Life Underwriters, Lion's Club, Gideons, Thrivent, Lutheran Layman's League, American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and numerous other civic organizations and held a number of officer positions with those groups. He also actively and proudly supported FHSU athletics and the Hays Larks.

He is survived by his wife, Viola Kaempfe, son Victor Kaempfe (wife Tracy, son Richard), daughter Tina Anguish (husband Al) along with sisters Bonnie Gabel, Mary Alire, and brother William Kaempfe, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. On Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 20th and Main, Hays. Burial with military honors by the Hays American Legion will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, and on Thursday from 1:00 until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Hays Medical Center, Messiah Lutheran Church, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sylvan Grove, or a charity of the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.
