The Bretthauer family moved to Reno in the 1940's, where Walter owned and operated a service station on the corner of Court and Sierra Streets. In 1954 He began working for the Southern Pacific Railroad.
Walter was a member of Paul Revere Lodge #162, F&AM of Denver, Scottish Rite Bodies of Reno, Kerak Temple of the Shrine, and the Machinist #705 of Sparks. He was a former member of the Knights of Pythias and the Reno Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors included his wife, Lucy, and two sons.
