Phillip Saar, carpenter, came to America in 1883 with his first wife Bertha (Krause) and their six young children. They added one more, before Bertha passed away in 1890. In 1900, Phillip married the widowed Emma (Steindel) Matern (whom he very likely already knew as they came from the same town in Germany), but she died just a few weeks later. Phillip survived Emma by eighteen years, and although death came to him at the height of the Spanish Influenza epidemic, the cause recorded was a cerebral hemorrhage or stroke.
