James married Mary Anne Speer who was born March 25, 1827 in Indiana Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Mary died April 13 1883, in Sharpsburg. They had six sons and one daughter.
Over a number of years James owned and operated 15 first class river boats out of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River with trips to the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The boats included the “Jenny Lind” (1846), “Virginia Belle” (1852-59), “Cottage I” (1861-62), “Cottage II” (1862-64), “Urilds” (1865-66) and “Le Claire” (1867).
Capt Saint retired from boating in 1867 and with the money from the sale bought a farm near Salem, Ohio which he successfully operated for five years, after which he moved to Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania and engaged in the planing mill business in which he continued until 1885. His health then suffered from partial paralysis of a leg and in 1886 his daughter Ella took him to Greenwood Springs, Colorado, where they remained until May 1900 when they went to Leadville, Colorado. James died February 19, 1902 and was buried in Leadville, Colorado.
