Funeral services were held at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church on Monday with the Rev. William Kiel officiating. Burial is in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Topeka, Kan. at 1 p.m. today.
He was born Oct. 19, 1924, in Watkins, Minn., to Henry Ludwig and Katherine Wittman Vossen.
He graduated from high school in Kimball, Minn. He attended St. John's University in in Collegeville, Minn., and then entered the Navy in 1943.
He served on the USS California and the USS Endymion, a repair ship, which was stationed in Hawaii and then Oregon. He was discharged in 1945.
He continued his education at the University of Minnesota where he received a degree and then started working for the U.S. Department on Agriculture, doing research in the handling and production of chickens and eggs.
In 1950 he married Mary Lou Walsh of Elkton and started farming in Watkins, Minn., where he also taught farming to veterans from the Korean War.
In 1952 he moved to Washington, D.C. to start work as an agricultural statistician for the U.S. Department of Agricultural Crop Reporting Service. He was transferred to Lansing, Mich., in 1953 and then to Columbus, Ohio in 1956.
In 1963 he transferred to Fargo, N.D., Crop Reporting Service, where he was assistant statistician in charge and acting statistician in charge.
In 1976 he transferred to Topeka, Kan. to the Kansas Crop Reporting Service.
After 38 years of government service, he retired in 1987 and moved to Indiana, Pa., in 2003. He was a member of St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church, the VFW, the Knights of Columbus and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He is survived by his wife; five children, Maureen Biggar of Brooking, Paul R. (Laurel) Vossen of Jefferson City, Mo., Patrice (Tom) Harley of Indiana, Laura A. Vossen of Indiana and Brian R. (Lynne) Vossen of Lynchberg. Va.; 15 grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy E. Vossen of St. Cloud, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert James Vossen; two daughters, Marsha and Amy Jo Vossen; three brothers, Victor, Alphonse and Gilbert Vossen and one sister, Viola Vossen.
