Walter Dale Esther, son of Walter and Lula Miller Esther, was born September 30, 1923, near Decaturville, Missouri. He departed this life Monday, December 20, 2004, in the home where he was born, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty-one years, two months, and twenty days.

In 1942, he married Helen Collins, and to this union two daughters and three sons were born.

On October 11, 1974, he was united in marriage to Janet Hope Wolken, and together they shared the last thirty years.
His parents, two brothers, Kinder and Joe Esther, a sister, Irene Mott, and a grandson, Stan Clayman, preceded him in death.

Dale is survived by his loving wife, Janet, of the home; two daughters, Rogenia Esther, of Phillipsburg, Missouri, and Phyllis Frederick, and her husband, James, of Belle, Missouri; three sons, Phil Esther, of Lebanon, Missouri, Ronald D. Esther, and his wife, Virginia, of Olive Branch, Mississippi, and Ken Esther, and his wife, Louann, of Marietta, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dean Esther, and his wife, Harlene, of Bolivar, Missouri; two sisters, Betty Hartung, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Eugenia Mulcare, of McLean, Virginia; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

He was born and raised in northern Laclede County, and graduated from Lebanon High School in the Class of 1941. During World War II, Dale served as an instructor in the United States Army Engineers. He then made his home on his ranch near Lebanon, where he worked as a stockman and raised Fox Trotting Horses. He served as the Laclede County Circuit Clerk and Recorder for twelve years. He was a former rodeo contractor and was influential in the breeding of Fox Trotters, having raised a number of world champions.
He helped reorganize the Missouri Fox Trotting Association in 1958, and served as an officer and on the board of directors for many years. He relinquished his seat on the board of directors in September of 2004 due to ill health. He owned and rode stallions Golden Governor, Golden Rawhide, Red Rawhide, and Zane Grey, to name a few.

As a young man, Dale made his profession of faith in Christ and was baptized into the Zion Baptist Church.

His family was very important to him and he enjoyed visiting with his many friends. One of his favorite quotes was, "I don't know which I like better, horses, or people that like horses."

Dale was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. He was a devoted family man, a hardworking stockman, and a respected horseman. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and will treasure the wonderful memories he created for his family and friends.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 23, 2004, in the Holman-Howe Chapel. Burial will be in the Lebanon Cemetery, with Full Military Rites by V.F.W. Post # 4107. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon, Missouri.
