1863 - Henry Ebel - 1945

The burial service for Mr. Henry Ebel, a pioneer Caledonia Township resident, was held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, on Friday afternoon, January 5th, 1945. The service was in charge of the Rev. W. H. Jurgens, the local pastor, who preached on the 90th Psalm. The body was laid to rest on the St. John Cemetery, to await the morn of the resurrection of all flesh.

Henry Fred Christian Ebel, the son of Christian Ebel and his wife Sophia nee Sohn, was born on July 15, 1863, in Cook County, Illinois. In the Coopers Grove Congregation, he was brought to the Lord Jesus through the Sacrament of holy baptism, administered by the sainted Pastor E, Riedel, on July 26, 1863. On April 9th, 1876, the day of his confirmation, the deceased renewed his pledge of loyalty and obedience to the Triune God.

In the year 1881 the departed came to Caledonia Township, Iowa, settling on a farm 3½ miles northwest of St. John Church, whose Congregation he joined at once. On February 28. 1892, he married one of the daughters of the Congregation, Miss Marie Kluender, with whom he lived in happy marriage until her death on June 10, 1926. Since that time, the deceased had made his home with his children here and in Minnesota.

The deceased had shown evidences of the frailty of advancing age, but the Lord graciously spared him a long and painful deathbed. On New Year's Day toward evening, he collapsed in the home of one of his children, and in the early morning hours of January 2nd the Lord delivered him. His earthly pilgrimage endured for 81 years, 5 months, and 17 days.

His departure is mourned by his children: Walter, resident here; Edwin and Reinhart, of Paullina; Rosa, Mrs. Emil Wittrock, of lona, Minnesota; Elma, Mrs. Wm. Gaudian, of Sutherland, 26 grandchildren; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren, three brothers, John, resident here, Chris, of Paullina; Rudolph, of Sisseton. S. D., two sisters. Mrs. Dorothy Breitbarth, of Truman, Minn.; Mrs. John Siebrandt of Nebraska. [The remaining obituary was not able to be read]
