Marian S. Palmer of Turlock passed away in her home surrounded by family.

Mrs. Palmer was born in Turlock to James and Rose Smith.

She is survived by her two daughters, Cynthia Palmer of Lakeport and Sylvia Palmer Cox of Turlock; four grandchildren, Ingrid Fruth of Moscow, Idaho, Adam Fruth of Turlock, Alison Cox of New York City, and Ens. Ramsey Cox of Pensacola, Florida; and one great-grandchild, Cole Erwin of Moscow, Idaho.

She is also survived by her brother, Donald J. Smith of Turlock.

Mrs. Palmer was preceded in death by her husband John William Bill Palmer.

Mrs. Palmer attended Turlock schools and was the first person in her family to attend college where she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley.

She taught home economics in St. Helena, Gilroy, Honolulu and Modesto. She continued to offer her service as a substitute teacher in the county for many years.

She was an active partner in Turlock Fruit Company, a farming concern in the San Joaquin Valley, until her retirement in 1992.

Mrs. Palmer's community service was certainly extensive. It culminated with the honor of being named 26th Assembly District's Woman of the Year in 2003 for her many community activities. Assemblyman Greg Aghazarian made the special award presentation in Sacramento.

Some of her other recognitions included the Turlock Chamber of Commerce's Humanitarian Award, Turlock Rotary Club's Paul Harris Award and the Yosemite Chapter of the Assn. of Fundraising Professionals' Outstanding Philanthropist Award.

She was a member of the Turlock Historical Society Board of Directors; member of the Advisory and Foundation Boards for CSU Stanislaus; and past president of Republican Women Federated of Turlock.

She was involved with the Turlock High School PTA, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Girl Scouts of America, Brownies, Skandifest and other places where she was needed. She was an active member of PEO, Chapter BY for 58 years.

Mrs. Palmer was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, Turlock and served her church in many capacities.

Mrs. Palmer, perhaps, is best known for her commitment and dedication to the Emanuel Hospital having served many years on the Board of Directors. She was a founding member of the Emanuel Hospital Auxiliary. This organization has become the largest and most successful hospital volunteer group in the area raising nearly $2 million for special hospital equipment and programs since its inception.

Her community interests were only superceded by her unconditional love and devotion to her precious family.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock.

The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the first United Methodist Church, Turlock, 1660 Arbor Way, Turlock with burial at Turlock Memorial Park.
