Sister Helen Esther was born to Anton and Elizabeth (Kramer) Lueck March 28, 1921, in New Vienna, Iowa. She entered St. Rose Convent in 1941, and made profession of vows in 1944. Sister Helen Esther taught on the elementary level for 17 years in Carroll, Iowa, Spokane, Wash., and at St. Wenceslaus School, La Crosse. From 1961-1974, she served as an instructor in the education department at Viterbo College (University). This was followed by a nine-year stint as principal at St. Pius School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1983, Sister Helen Esther was appointed administrator of Villa St. Joseph. After 12 years, she retired from that position to be a volunteer at the Villa. She formally retired at the Villa in 2007.
Sister Helen Esther is survived by her Franciscan community and nieces and nephews, including Sister Karen Lueck, FSPA. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, John, Raymond, Lawrence and Herbert; and her sisters, Olive, Rose, Agnes, Clara and Clotilda.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, at St. Rose Convent, La Crosse. A prayer service will be held that evening at 6:30 p.m. in Mary of the Angels Chapel. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the chapel. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse.
