ELWOOD — Berdina L. Pfeiffer, 81, of Ralston died Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at Elwood Care Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood with the Rev. Michael Wolff officiating. Burial will be at Elwood Cemetery. Elwood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Berdina was born March 8, 1934, in Eustis to John F. and Lucille E. (Puls) Moritz.
Berdina attended school in Eustis and graduated in 1951. She attended Kearney State Teachers College and then taught rural school at Houser School District.
Berdina married Melvin B. Houlden on Jan. 1, 1956, at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Elwood. They made their home south of Elwood where they farmed and also raised their family. Melvin passed away on March 7, 2007.
Berdina married William E. Pfeiffer on April 19, 2012, in Lexington. They lived part of the time at the farm in Elwood and more recently lived primarily in Ralston.
Berdina was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran in Elwood where she was active in Ladies Aid. Berdina and Bill also attended First Lutheran Church in Papillion. Berdina served as a member of the Elwood Public School Board for many years. She was a longtime member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 290. Over the years she attended countless numbers of athletic, academic and musical events.
Berdina loved flowers, gardening, playing cards and dancing. She loved time spent with family and friends.
Berdina was a loving mother to her children. Her memory will be respected and cherished by her husband, William Pfeiffer of Ralston; children and spouses, Stan and Margo Houlden of Friend, Connie Houlden of Oxford, Iowa, Ed Houlden of Elwood, Mary Jane Ervin of North Liberty, Iowa, Rocky and Suzie Oaklund of Kearney, Susan MacDonald of Elyria, Ohio, Linda and Karl Clark of Milford and Ronnie and Katrina Oaklund of Elwood; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; adopted son, Denny and wife Irene Kenning of Elwood; stepchildren and spouses, Brad and Shelly Pfeiffer of Ashland and Shelly Gray, Jeff Pfeiffer and Andy Pfeiffer, all of Omaha; 11 stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
Berdina also is survived by her sister, Donna Lehman of Juniata; sister-in-law, Verna Moritz of Cozad; brother-in-law, Dean and wife Elaine Houlden of Elwood; sister-in-law, Barbara Halloway of Poquoson, Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Berdina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin Houlden; parents-in law, Clyde Sr. and Mary Houlden; daughter-in-law, Julie Houlden; grandsons, Shayne MacDonald and Connor Houlden; and numerous other relatives.
