Survivors include his wife, Janet of Crescent City; two daughters, Anna (Anthony) VanHoveln of North Pole, AK, and Kate Koester Gaddi of Chicago; one son, Matt (Sarah) Koester of Crescent City; four grandchildren, Andrea Sykora, Adam VanHoveln, Brittney Koester, and Briana Koester; four great grandchildren, Kal VanHoveln, Lex VanHoveln, Madison Sykora, and Mason Sykora; one sister, Dorothy Betterman of Crescent City; and one brother Donald Koester of Crescent City.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Victor Koester.
Mr. Koester was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Crescent City, where he held many offices within the church. He was a member and past president of the Watseka American Legion Post #23. Mel served on the Crescent City Grade School board for many years. He was an active volunteer who enjoyed helping with the church breakfast shift at the Iroquois County Fair. Mr. Koester served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Crescent City. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:30 until the 11:00 a.m. church service. Pastor Joel Brown will officiate. Burial will be at Flesher Cemetery in Crescent City with military graveside rites by Watseka American Legion Post #23 and Iroquois County VFW Post #7450.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church or Faith Place in Danforth.
