John Flynn served in the U.S. Army Air Force/Air Force beginning in 1942. A veteran of W.W.II, Korea, and the Vietnam wars, he was shot down over North Vietnam on October 29, 1967 and remained a prisoner until his release on March 14, 1973. On August 15, 1974, he became commander of the Air Force Military Training Center at Lackland AFB, San Antonio. His military decorations and awards include Purple Heart with 1 oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with 6 oak leaf clusters, and Silver Star, to name a few. He retired from the service a Lt. General.
