On October 5, 2015, Marvin H. Goehring, age 83, saw the lights of heaven and started his journey to his heavenly home from the Avera St. Benedict Health Center. The funeral service will be Thursday, October 8th, at 10:00 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ at Parkston. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 7th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Marvin H. Goehring, son of Alvin and Margaret (Fink) Goehring was born December 9, 1931, at Delmont, South Dakota. He attended rural school and graduated from Delmont High School in 1949. On July 21, 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army. After basic training in Kentucky, he was sent to Korea for three months and then transferred to Japan, where he did office work. He received his military release on July 10, 1954. Upon returning from Japan, he enrolled at South Dakota State University where he majored in Agri-Business. On August 8, 1958, he married Shirley Litz at the Salem Congregational Church at Parkston. In 1959, he accepted a position at the Farmers State Bank of Parkston, South Dakota. On September 16, 1968, he was promoted to the insurance department, which he managed for eight years. On July 1, 1976, he purchased the Insurance Agency, and after being self-employed for eight years, he sold it to V.E. Bormann on January 1, 1984. Marvin has been a long time resident of Parkston and has been an active member of the Salem United Church of Christ, serving as a deacon, secretary, treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, adult Sunday school teacher, a delegate to several church conventions as well as Treasurer of the building project when the Fellowship Hall was built. He has served the community in many capacities, such as treasurer of the American Legion Post #194 of which he was a lifetime member, president of the Parkston Bowling Association, secretary of the bowling league, treasurer of the Salvation Army, treasurer of the Parkston Ministerial Association, Quartermaster of the VFW and lifetime member, a longtime member of the Honor Guard, treasurer of the Parkston Lions Club for 29 years and was honored by receiving the Lions Melvin Jones Fellow Award, treasurer of the West Hutchinson County American Cancer Society, was the first secretary-treasurer of the Parkston Ambulance Service which he served for 18 years, served on the hospital board, was on the Parkston Veterans Memorial Committee and until recently has helped every year since 1996 with the Avenue of Flags, was a volunteer of Meals on Wheels, and was a cashier every Tuesday of Senior Meals for many years. Marvin and Shirley enjoyed 57 years of married life. For 23 winters, they lived in a retirement park near Harlingen, Texas, where Marvin did a lot of volunteer work. He was always willing to help others. Marvin loved being outside and enjoyed hauling grain for many of his retirement years and enjoyed working in the yard. He also loved traveling, carpentry, woodworking, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Marvin’s priorities were faith, family, and country.

Grateful for having shared in Marvin’s life are his wife, Shirley, of 57 years, his son, Keith of Parkston, sister-in-law, Luella Goehring of Tripp, four grandchildren, Christen (Tim) Wermers, Matt (Danielle) Bialas, Emily Bialas, and Mandy Bialas, two great granddaughters, Sophie and Stella, all of Sioux Falls, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lotar, two sisters, Lucille in infancy and Mildred Dutro, one brother-in-law, Theodore Denke, and a daughter-in-law, Carol Goehring.
