John and two companions had just climbed Mount Borah in Idaho and were on their way down from the summit when the group was overtaken by a violent snow storm with lightning. The three young men took cover in a cave, but then decided to make a break for it and try to get down off the mountain. Lightning struck, one of the young men was injured, and John was killed. In the swirling snow his companions could not find John. They made their way safely down the mountain and called for help. His body was retrieved from the mountain by a rescue party the following day.

John was the older brother of James Beck Landenberger.
