Jim was born October 23, 1934 in Freeport to George and Marie (Middendorf) Heidgerken. He grew up on the tamily farm in rural Freeport, graduating from Melrose High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Korean War, later serving in the Merchant Marines. Jim married Doreen (Schaefer) Salzl on May 15, 1992 in St. Martin. Jim owned various establishments during his lifetime in central Minnesota, including the Dug Out Bar, Albany, Short Stop Bar, St. Martin, Jim's Farming Bar, Farming, and he tended bar at Goatropers Bar and Grill, Farming, the last several years. He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church, Catholic Aid Society, Catholic Order of Foresters, i Albany I American Legion Post 482, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. Jim loved his family, friends, and was well respected in the community. He enjoyed playing softball, pool, darts, bowling, rock picking, and walking Blackie.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen, St. Martin; step children; Bruce (Sue) Salzl of Albany, Bonnie (Tom) Dingmann of Albany, and Sheri (Dennis) Meyer of Cold Spring, his dog, Blackie, 8 step grandchildren, brothers and sisters, John (Louise) Heidgerken of Minnetonka, Dennis Heidgerken of Freeport, Charles (Shirley) Heidgerken of Freeport, Paul (Mary Ann) Heidgerken of Albany, Peter (Marilyn) Heidgerken of Freeport, Irene (James) Obermiller of Freeport, Bernard "Bud" (Ann) Heidgerken of Freeport, Mary (Ted) Hinnenkamp of Albert Lea, and Carol (Glen) Soderholm of New Ulm; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives.
