Roddy Arthur Brandes, 81, of Cornelius, died August 6, 2001 at Lake Norman Regional Hospital. He was born June 22, 1920 in Charlotte, NC, the son of the late Alwin J. and Minnie Ann (Garrison) Brandes.

He served as a Captain in the United States Army Air Corps (1939-1946) and was a World War II veteran. He graduated from Central High School, Class of 1939, Charlotte, NC and The Command and General Staff School, Kansas.

He was Owner and CEO of Safeway Truck Leasing Co., Inc., 1948-1960. He was then asked by the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to set up an ambulance service for Charlotte and the surrounding area. He was the Owner and CEO of Mecklenburg Emergency Services, 1960-1978. Since 1978 he was President and CEO of Property Investment Corp. Since his retirement, he has been Owner and Operator of Fox Creek Farms, Inc. in Troutdale, VA. He was a Shriner and Mason. He was also an accomplished pilot.

Nationally, he was recognized as a pioneer in developing and providing ambulance innovations and emergency medical service. He was a Consultant to United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Washington, DC, 1967-1977, Consultant to National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC, 1969-1973, Consultant to American Medical Association, Chicago, IL, 1970-1974. He was also President of the Ambulance Association of America and the first Chairman of the National Registry Emergency Medical Technicians, Columbus, OH.

In his earlier years, Roddy grew up in First Methodist Church of Charlotte. He later was elected Deacon and then Elder in Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charlotte. Later he served as a Deacon and then Elder in Sardis Presbyterian Church, Charlotte. After moving to Lake Norman, he joined Bethel Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder until his death. He enjoyed serving as a Mentor to Bethel's Communicants Class.

Besides his wife of 59 years, Marguerite Johnson Brandes, he is survived by his son, Roddey Whitfield Brandes of Denver, NC; his daughter, Ila Ann and her husband, Timothy R. Bowen, of Cornelius; and his two grandsons, Timothy Brandes Bowen and Nathaniel Brandes Bowen, who were the joy of his life. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and two sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Alwina B. Doran, Dorothy B. Powers and Julia B. Conkle; and his brothers, James E. and Bobby G. Brandes.

Funeral service will be held 11:30 AM Thursday, August 9, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Cornelius, with the Reverend Rob Hinman and the Reverend J.E. Wayland, Jr. officiating.

Honorary Pall Bearers will be Elders and Deacons of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Coach Bob Allen's Boys, and the Central High Breakfast Group.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church for the Habitat for Humanity Program, 19920 Bethel Church Road, Cornelius, NC 28031.
