Born on April 27, 1955 at Carroll, Iowa, Thomas Nees was the son of Kenneth and Jeanette (Baumhover) Nees. Tom attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Grade School and later graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School with the Class of 1973.

On July 27, 1974, he was united in marriage to Rosanne Snyder at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll.
