He was also my God Father.
He would read voraciously and loved American history.
When WWII broke out, he, as millions of other American men, promptly answered the call to defend our country. He was stationed on the Galapagos Islands where the U.S. had an airstrip, mainly used as an emergency landing for Allied planes. Later he was stationed in South & Central America, guarding Allied assets (oilfields, mines, Panama Canal, etc).
Postwar, Uncle Carlton entered the hotel/country club business. He (in chronological order) managed the Army-Navy Country Club in Bethesda, the Mayflower Hotel in Wash., D.C., the Arlington Country Club, then the Commonwealth Club in Richmond.
While managing the Army-Navy CC, he rubbed elbows with Admirals, Generals and other naval or army officers; he was on a first-name basis with General of the Army Omar Bradley--!
He loved his family dearly and was always willing to help. He and Great-Aunt Laura (my mother's aunt and namesake) sponsored my parents & older sister who immigrated from France in Winter '48-49, boarding them upstairs in their home with Carlton getting my father his 1st job.
