S. Rosemary Robers

Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Rosemary (formerly Rita Miriam) Robers died October 22, 2015, at the age of 89 in Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility for the Congregation. Sister Rosemary was born on July 28, 1926, to John and Rose (Boehle) Robers in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 71 years, entering in 1944.

Sister Rosemary was educated at St. Patrick and St. Margaret Mary Schools, graduating from Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1944. As a senior student at the Academy Rosemary had both a great aunt and a sister in the community; she wanted to be like them. Sister entered the Sisters of Charity in the fall after graduation.

Sister Rosemary earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the College of Mount St. Joseph in 1956 and a master’s degree in English from St. Johns Teachers College, Cleveland, Ohio, in 1965. Sister taught primary, intermediate and junior high students in schools in Michigan, Maryland and Ohio for more than fifty years. She began her teaching in 1946 at Guardian Angels School, Detroit, Michigan. This was followed by: St. Dominic, Cincinnati, 1948-‘52; Holy Family, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1952-’54; Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak, Michigan, 1954-‘59; Queen of Martyrs, 1959-‘60; St. Albert, Kettering, Ohio, 1960-’64; St. Charles, Kettering, Ohio, 1964-’69; Holy Redeemer, Kensington, Maryland, 1969-‘71; St. Mary, Hyde Park, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1971-’83; Holy Family/Our Lady of Grace, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1983-’85; Price Hill Catholic, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1985-’88; St. Dominic, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1988-’93.

In 1993 as she neared retirement age Sister Rosemary wanted a productive career change, but desired to continue as a teacher, a ministry which she always loved. Having taken a computer class at Mount St. Joseph College a few years previous, and hearing that St. Lawrence School had a room full of computers but no teacher, she applied. She prepared herself by taking an array of computer classes at Oak Hills High School, got a tutor, sought the help of another computer teacher to set up the lab, repaired and readied the room. She was teaching, students were eager to learn, and she enjoyed all ages, K through 8. It was a wonderful way to transition, a ministry that kept her in touch with young people and learning until 1998. It grew from a challenge to a hobby for Sister Rosemary.

When it came time to retire Sister Rosemary volunteered in the Seton High School library and then continued to commute from living at Farrell House to volunteering as a library assistant at the Motherhouse. She served in the Motherhouse Resource Center for seven years, processing the acquisition of books and periodicals, referring to it as “the best place to work in the whole Motherhouse.” In 2006 she moved to the Motherhouse and following surgery in 2008 she chose to move to Assisted Living in Mother Margaret Hall where she served in the ministry of prayer.
