[Updated May 2016, following the discovery of Michael Leonhardt's birth record]

See photo on this page showing the birth record (baptism)for Hanss Michael Leonhardt (who went by Michael or Michol) which took place 04 Sep 1683 in Stromberg, a small village not far from Katzenbach, Germany. Included in the caption is a transcription of this record, showing that his father is Martin Leonhardt. Other records show that Martin's spouse at the time was Anna Elisabetha Frondoerffer.

That is, Martin Leonhard is in fact the father of Michael Leonhard (and thus the GRANDfather of Valentin.)

Later Michael and Martin and their families migrated to Katzenbach. It is known that Michael Leonhardt resided in Katzenbach from at least 1710 until his death in 1733.

See a second photo on this page that shows tax appraisal lists for Katzenbach, Germany for 1684 and 1722 listing this Michael Leonhardt, as well as Martin Leonhard ("an old man").

A third photo shows that Michael was the father of Valentin Leonhardt. This record is the Confirmation record on Easter of 1733 in Katzenbach for his son Valentin. (This confirmation took place just a few months after Michael’s death.) This confirmation record also shows that Valentin Leonhardt was born approximately 1719, as youths are generally confirmed into their particular church near the age 14. Michael Leonhardt's spouse in 1719 was Johannetta (surname unknown). The caption for this photo contains a transcription.

[In the same Confirmation Class of Easter 1733 as Valentin Leonhardt was Anna Elisabeth Wallacher, who was later to become Valentin's wife.]

Michael had other wives (including Anna Catharina and Anna Margretha).

Michael and Johannetta's children include Elisabetha, Johann Jacob, Anna Catharina, Maria Catharina, as well as Valentin Leonhard.

Michael was buried in Katzenbach, Germany, on Jan 11, 1733, at age 49 years. A fourth photo shows the Burial Record for this Michael Leonhardt. The caption has a transcription.

All the above works together to show that this Michael Leonhardt and his spouse Johannetta (surname unknown) were the parents of Valentin Leonhardt (Valentine Leonard of Davidson Co., NC). All this has been known since 1997, when part of the 100-year old legend of the early Leonhardt history was shown to be faulty.

The primary fault in the legend was the CLAIM that the other Leonhard (Martin) mentioned in the 1722 tax list had been Valentin's father. We now know that Martin was in fact Valentin's grandfather.

Click the parent link below to see the recently [2016] discovered record that shows the names of Michael's grandparents (and hence Valentin's great-grandparents).
