Born in and emigrated with family of Peter Johann (born in Schilling/Sosnovka - Saratov Oblast) and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Kraft Schmidt (born in Neu-Norka village, Volgograd Oblast) from the German Russian Lutheran Settlement of Alexandertal - Neu Schilling (50 degrees 19' North latitude 45 degrees 23' East longitude), next to the Astrakhan postal highway west of the Volga River in the Kamyshinsky region of northeast Volgograd Oblast, Russia to the US via New York City in 1890. German speaking Russian parents with children, Lutheran Church members, first settled on a farm in Durham Park Township, Marion County, Kansas.

Jacob worked primarily as a baker and farmed vegetables while living in Artesia and Pasadena for the Los Angeles market from farm in Artesia, Calif. In the 1930's he moved his family to the Eugene, Oregon area and worked various jobs in the forestry industries, then in the early 1940's moved back to Calif. and resided in various cities of Santa Cruz, Fresno, and back to the Pasadena area. Over his lifetime he went by the first names Jake, Jacob, J.J. to John.

Married Helena "Lena" Bergmann of Hillsboro, Kansas in Pasadena, Los Angeles County, CA on 1 May 1906.
