Born Anna Stinson in 1923, she lost her mother when she was barely a year old. Sent to live with her mother's cousin Leonidas Lafayette Polk Dixon and his wife Ruth (Small) Dixon, she was given the name Anna Ruth Dixon when she was taken in. Mrs. and Mrs. Dixon wanted to adopt her, but in a series of protracted court battles they lost on the adoption but were able to retain custody of Anna until she turned 21. Mrs. and Mrs. Dixon promptly adopted her the day after her birthday. The event was purely symbolic, as she had married Ronald Gyles the year before.

From her obituary, published in the Charlotte Observer on June 4, 2016:

Anna Ruth (Dixon) Gyles (1923 - 2016)

Mrs. Gyles, age 92, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 31, 2016. She graduated from Meredith College with a degree in Home Economics. Mrs. Gyles was a member of Briar Creek Baptist Church and its Jolly Bunch. She was a member of Eastern Star and Red Hat Society.

Survivors include a son, two grandchildren, a great-grandson, and a daughter-in-law [n.b.: the daughter-in-law, Susan (Smalley) Gyles, died the next year]. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gyles was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Corbin Gyles, Jr.; a son, Polk Dixon Gyles; and a sister, Elizabeth Wilson.
